The Canadians are coming of their most successful Davis Cup season ever after advancing to the semifinals where they were defeated by top-ranked Serbia. Japan is making its return to the World Group in 2014 after a one year absence. They defeated Colombia 3-2 in their World Group playoff tie in September to advance back into the Top 16.
