But it wasn’t a member of the Giants’ trio who walked away from the game with the highlight shot. No, that moment belonged to Hamlin, who drained a half-court shot over Jones’ head, earning himself the nickname “Denny Dimes.”Jones, a Charlotte, North Carolina native, connected with Hamlin through some mutual friends and the two were able to set up a game at Hamlin’s home, which features a private basketball court.
“One of my mutual friends asked and said ‘Hey, they’d like to play basketball, do you mind if they play at your place?’ I didn’t mind, of course,” Hamlin told reporters on Friday. “Unfortunately they were short bodies, so I had to lace them up. I really didn’t want to, to be honest with you. But that was how I met them — fun guys.”
Hamlin said the real goal was just to get Jones, Slayton and Sills off of their racing simulator. Apparently, the trio had become a bit addicted and now want to race some cars themselves.
“They couldn’t get them off the racing simulators,” Hamlin said. “They had a lot of questions. One of them was where could they get a ride along. They want to race a car now and [they also wanted to know] where to get a simulator.” |
