It was big news when former Atlanta Hawk Mike Scott was arrested in 2015 and charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of buy 2K MT a Schedule I drug. It may be even bigger news in 2017 that his arrest was "the worst case of racial profiling I have ever seen," according to a judge in Banks County, Ga. (via the Atlanta Journal Constitution).
Almost all of the evidence seized by deputy sheriff Brent Register has been suppressed as Judge Currie M. Mingledorff found there was no probable cause to pull over Scott and his brother Antonn (who was driving) on a traffic stop and that there was less evidence to allow a search of the vehicle.
According to the Journal Constitution, Register says he attempted to stop Antonn Scott for following a car too closely, but when the deputy turned on his lights and siren, Scott attempted to flee, allegedly at speeds up to "98 mph." However, the speed was not assessed by a radar, but by Register "gauging the speed by looking at his own speedometer."Register alleged the chase on Interstate 85 began at mile marker 154 and ended at mile marker 156, but tow trucks that arrived on scene to impound the car marked their location at mile marker 154.
Also between the time Register allegedly turned on his siren and when he pulled over the Scotts two miles down the road, his calls to dispatch were 12 seconds apart."Traveling two miles in 12 seconds would require a speed of 600 mph," a motion filed by the Scott's attorneys said. "Mr. Scott was driving a Suburban, not a jet airplane.
"That evidence plus finding that of 47 arrests made by Register in 2015 and '16, 44 involved minorities were more than enough for Mingledorff to supress almost all of the evidence. There was no dash-cam footage.Mike Scott, 28, has not yet been cleared of NBA 2K18 mt all charges, but with the ruling by the judge the case appears closer to resolution in his favor.Scott played with the Hawks for four seasons before being traded to the Suns in February for cash as the charges were hanging over his head. |
